After spending the majority of the day networking, I came to the realization that I had engaged in conversations with numerous individuals whom I had never met before, and I found the experience truly enjoyable. Interacting with others has been shown to enhance mental well-being, as the British Psychological Society notes that "An increasing amount of research indicates that conversing with strangers can enhance our overall health."
While there are various obstacles and barriers to engaging with unfamiliar individuals, such as low self-esteem, concerns about the flow of conversation, and knowing how to conclude the interaction appropriately, the benefits can surpass the worry.
Engaging in conversations with others can be beneficial in lowering our stress levels. By discussing our problems and concerns with someone else, we are able to gain clarity on the stressful situation, obtain a different perspective, and alleviate tension.
Having support from others can help with feelings of loneliness and isolation giving us a sense of purpose and a feeling of belonging. We also find that by staring conversations we not only help our own mental health but we can support others and allow a flow of ideas, thoughts, acceptance and helps us feel grounded.
